The second Kevin J. McKenna Memorial Scholarship was awarded just last week. It was very rewarding to see the culmination of our hard work and support from our friends and family.
My family attended the 2016 Scholarship Night at Woburn Memorial High School on June 1st. It was a wonderful evening and we really enjoyed seeing the graduating class rewarded for their hard work over the past 4 years.
We presented Kev's award on stage, which was a little nerve-wracking, but it was really nice to be able to talk about Kevin and share some personal stories with the audience. Before I knew it, it was time to announce the winner. We were honored to announce Thomas Connors as the recipient of the scholarship.
We chose Thomas for his passionate commitment to athletics, and serious dedication to family. The sincerity Tom conveyed in his application was very touching and actually made us tear up while we read. We knew instantly he was the perfect choice.
Thomas played soccer, hockey, and baseball throughout his four years at Woburn High. Yes, he is an athlete - surely you can see why we chose him for Kev's award. In addition to athletics, Tom was the Vice President of LEARN, whose mission is to stop impaired driving and promote safety and responsibility when making choices regarding substance abuse. This is such a prominent issue today and we were pleased to know that Thomas is doing his part to help educate his peers and make smart decisions. Tom also works a part-time job at Sports Authority, where he's been saving money for his college education.
Thomas will be attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the fall and we wish him the very best. Congratulations, Tom!
